The 2017 John Passmore Lecture: 'Can we be rational and fair under risk and uncertrainty?'
Thursday 10 August 2017
The 2017 John Passmore Lecture for the ANU School of Philosophy
By Professor Marc Fleurbaey, Robert E. Kuenne Professor in Economics and Humanistic Studies, Professor of Public Affairs and the University Centre for Human Values, Princeton University.
Can we be rational and fair under risk and certainty?
Risk and uncertainty are everywhere in social affairs and raise challenges for the normative evaluation of policy. This lecture will lead the audience through three key problems: 1) Is it rational to rely on other approaches than expected utility? 2) What is the relative importance of ex ante fairness and ex post inequalities? 3) Should individuals bear the consequences of the risks they take?
