The ANU Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Education recognise and encourage excellence in both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research supervision at the University.

The Excellence in Supervision award recognises a sustained record of strong and innovative commitment to students, and best practice in introducing students to research and research networks.The 2013 recipient of the Excellence in Supervision award is Professor Alan Hajek.

Professor Hájek was very pleased to receive the award: "This award means a great deal to me as I regard the supervision of PhD students as one of the most important aspects of my job. I consider myself lucky, as many of my colleagues at the ANU deserve this award". Regarding his approach to supervision, he commented: "I like to think that I'm old enough to have gained a few insights into how to do philosophy that I can pass on to my students, but not so old that I've forgotten what it's like to be in their shoes. In my opinion, supervision is not just about academic training, but also about empathy."
