Philip Pettit has been elected as a Corresponding Member of l’Académie des Science Morales et Politiques, in the Philosophy Section. This French academy has five sections, each with 10 full members and ten corresponding members; places become vacant only with the death of an existing member. With four other academies in the arts and sciences, it constitutes l’Institut de France. Philip and Thomas Nagel from New York University are the only philosophers from the English speaking world who are now members.
Philip is a Distinguished Professor for Philosophy at ANU and is L.S. Rockefeller University Professor of Politics and Human Values at Princeton University. He works in moral and political theory and on background issues in the philosophy of mind and metaphysics.
This is an amazing achievement for Philip, and all of us within the School of Philosophy would like to congratulate him.
