Three CASS HDR Students vie for #ANU3MT Crown

The ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences is proud to have three finalists in tonight’s #ANU3MT (3-minute Thesis) final for 2018. The 3MT is an international competition for research students, providing a unique opportunity for them to share to showcase their research in a concise and accessible format.

Our finalists, who come from three different Schools, exemplify the research excellence and diversity of subject matter that is the hallmark of the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences.

From the ANU School of Philosophy, Heather Browning will tonight talk to the animals. With a background in animal management, her current research uses Philosophy as a lens to look at animal welfare. Heather previously completed a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at ANU.

Kirrily Apthorp from ANU School of Archaeology and Anthropology will look at Ba langur primates, an exceptionally rare species found only in a small habitat in Vietnam. Kirrily completed her Master of Biological Anthropology at ANU.

And Katie Cox from ANU School of Literature, Languages and Linguistics, will explore links between the super heroes of comic fiction, and what they can teach us about coping with national security and real world crises. She previously completed a Bachelor of Arts in English at ANU.

The College wishes Heather, Kirrily and Katie the best of luck tonight. The twelve finalists tonight from across ANU are competing for the #ANU3MT 2018 crown and $4000 in prize money. The winner will receive a place in the 3MT Asia-Pacific grand final.

Tonight’s final is free and open to the public at Llewellyn Hall. Audience members may vote for their favourite speaker, who will receive the People’s Choice Award worth $500.
