Carolina Sartorio (Arizona): Actual Causes and Free Will

The topic of this talk is the contrast between two conceptions of free will: the classical model, which understands freedom in terms of alternative possibilities, and a model that focuses exclusively on the actual causes of action. This latter view was spearheaded by Frankfurt’s famous attack on the principle of alternative possibilities. I reexamine the nature of the debate and offer novel arguments in support of the actual-causes model.
