I consider a community of agents with a variety of different moral beliefs, practices and values.  Such diversity often leads to conflict, and recent work by Gregory Kavka (1995) as well Gerald Gaus (2011) has attempted to better understand how such infighting can be avoided.  I argue that the strategic interaction of interest can be best captured as a conflictual coordination game and that there are certain arrangements which both retain moral diversity and minimize conflict.  Lastly, I briefly discuss one interpretation of Locke’s state of nature and use the model developed in the course of this paper to shed light on this topic, as well as one famous proposal regarding the origin of the state put forth by Robert Nozick.
