Toby Solomon (ANU): Wagering on Free Will: How to do as Well as You Can [Thesis Proposal Review]

Pascal would have us wager for the existence of god, since the reward is so great it is worth any but an infinite risk. I would have you wager for your own (libertarian) free will, since if you lose you could not have won – your bet was determined for you. In this TPR I will defend this thesis from one of two major strands of objection; that even without libertarian free will our decisions are still open and 'up to us' in the sense required for rational deliberation. This objection is mostly championed by the compatibilist – who believes free will and causal determinism are consistent – and they will be the focus of this talk. Defenders of other metaphysical theses which come into conflict with the requirements on rational deliberation will have to wait for my full thesis; along with those who object that I am arguing from the 'wrong kind of reason'.
