Julia Staffel (ANU): Credences for Schroeder-Style Expressivists

Abstract: My goal in this talk is to investigate how expressivist theories of normative language and thought can account for the phenomenon of normative uncertainty. It has been shown that naïve expressivist theories have a serious problem with incorporating uncertainty into their framework. Yet, naïve expressivism also faces the Frege-Geach problem, so I will examine whether sophisticated expressivist views that can solve the Frege-Geach Problem can incorporate uncertainty. I will focus on the framework that Mark Schroeder develops in Being For, and show how to axiomatize rational degrees of uncertainty in his theory.
