Christian Barry (ANU) & Holly Lawford-Smith (Sheffield): 'On Satisfying Duties to Assist'

Most people acknowledge positive duties to help others in need. But they also regard these duties as limited: there's a point at which they can reasonably refuse to do more without failing to satisfy positive duties. The debate about positive duties has focused on the question of how much cost people are required to take on to help others in need. In this paper, however, we argue that there are many considerations in addition to costs taken on that are relevant to the satisfaction of positive duties.
