Matthew Hammerton (ANU): Deontology and Agent-Relativity
It is widely held that all deontological moral theories are agent-relative because they contain rules giving an agent a special concern that she does not perform acts of a certain type. However, some dispute this orthodoxy, arguing that deontology can be agent-neutral. In this paper I review arguments for agent-neutral deontology by Kamm, Dougherty, and Broome. I raise objections against each of these arguments and make the case that deontology is necessarily agent-relative
