Francesca Minerva (Melbourne): Unattractiveness as a moral problem
Studies in economics and in experimental psychology suggest that discrimination on the basis of appearance deeply affects the wellbeing of people who are generally agreed not to meet society’s norm for attractiveness (about 12% of the world population).
In order to analyze this issue from a moral perspective and to propose effective solutions, I will take into account: the importance of both biological and social/cultural influences on standards of attractiveness; the potential contribution of new technologies (such as human enhancement) in either worsening discrimination caused by appearance or potentially alleviating this form of discrimination; and the benefits of current and possible policies regulating the phenomenon.
