Thesis title: Emotions and Other Practices

I am a second-year PhD student at ANU. The question 'How should one live?' animates my broader philosophical interest, but my dissertation focuses on the narrower question: 'How should one feel?'. To understand ourselves is at least partly to understand our emotions and when they are appropriate or fitting, and I think we cannot make sense of this until we examine what kinds of things emotions are and the roles that they play in our interpersonal relationships. My research thus focuses on thinking about the kinds of mental states that emotions are and trying to articulate their relationship to our social practices.
